Upon arrive to the Netherlands I was pleasantly surprised to see how diverse the city of Amsterdam was.
There’s a variety of races, religions and cultures which I was admittly anxious for. Especially considering the fact that I’ve never traveled internationally prior to this experience.
We ate at the Gerard and to my surprise wasn’t carded for alchol. the chicken tacos were very flavorful despite the Duthes liberal interpretation of ‘gucamomle’.
The houses reminded me of Disney land because they’re narrower on top. Our first task was to do a scavengers hunt with someone we didn’t know. I cheated and went with Akash but didn’t know Tim. Tim is an untraditional student a lot older than us and prior to getting his masters in library science was an ER doctor. I just so happened to have some ear pain and he helped me out! Very cool down to earth guy, he has a daughter my age which is sweet.
Our scavenger hunt consisted of finding items professor Trent had written down.
Sam, another masters student has a bad ass tattoo on her knuckles that says Read.
I was struck by how bustling the city is. It reminded me of new York when my group was walking to Vondelpark.
The graffiti, posters, and wall art not to mention the beautiful and fashionable locals looked like something out of a curated Instagram feed.
I’m incredibly grateful in this moment.
Getting to the airport was relativity easy minus the whole ticket debacle.
The stairs to our hotel are extremely narrow and something I have to get used to.
Trent was right, the Dutch do have a staring problem…
When I went to the store – Albert Heijns – which I think is their version of walmart I saw that nearly every packaged food had a multi nutrition score of A, B, C or D corresponding with how healthy the food is.
I thought that was pretty neat.
