On week 2 we visited the black archives.

Located in the south east of Amsterdam houses collections of literature and work from black artists, historic leaders, and activists.

The black archives were started by the New Urban Collective, an initiate by young students and professionals alike to uplift the experiences of the black diaspora.

Some of the core objectives of The New Urban Collective include

1: educational attainment and strong labor market positions for Afro – Dutch descendants

2: self esteem within one’s talent and ability.

3: the promotion of professional knowledge for Afro – Dutch people

4: social, economic, and educational resource allocation

5: strengthening the relationship between members and the rest of the Dutch world

6: continue providing a network for the best interests of members

To date, the black archives has over 1000 collections.

Another archival site I feel is fitting to add to this blog post would be the OBA library located in south east Amsterdam.

It’s a library that serves the primarily black population. Social services from familiar faces occupy the space as well as a cultural exhibit.

Our tour guide told us he wants to have an exhibit in the space for those who can’t afford to go to museums and galleries.

I really appreciate the community outreach and the pan africanism in all these spaces. These parts of Amsterdam aren’t always showcased to tourists.
